Why the West Midlands is Fast Becoming the UK’s Health Innovation Capital

By Adam McGuinness

The healthcare industry is fundamental to the well-being of individuals and the strength of entire economies. Yet it faces growing challenges, including rising costs, workforce shortages, and increasing demand for accessible, high-quality care. At the same time, evolving regulations and the push for more sustainable and technology-driven solutions are accelerating innovation across the sector. From digital transformation to data-driven care models, the industry is rapidly evolving to meet the needs of a changing world.

Against this backdrop, the West Midlands is stepping up as a bold new centre for health innovation.

Plug and Play: Powering Open Innovation in UK Healthcare

In response to these challenges, Plug and Play is working to shape the future of healthcare through open innovation. With a mission to build the world’s leading innovation platform and make innovation accessible to everyone, everywhere, Plug and Play has made significant strides since launching in the UK in 2022. Anchored in the West Midlands, its Health Platform brings together startups, corporates, and research institutions to drive real-world healthcare transformation. In collaboration with the University of Birmingham and WMHTIA, the platform has already supported over 100 startups and helped mobilise nearly £50 million in private co-investment. As part of a broader £67 million innovation ecosystem, it serves as a proven catalyst for scaling health tech and delivering tangible impact, both locally and globally.

Why Did Plug and Play Choose the West Midlands?

Why did Plug and Play choose the West Midlands? The answer lies in the region’s unique blend of innovation heritage, commercial opportunity, and collaborative infrastructure.

The West Midlands has a proud history of innovation, from James Watt’s steam engine in 1770s Birmingham that sparked the Industrial Revolution, to Frank Whittle’s 1930s jet engine, which transformed aviation, Peter Mansfield’s groundbreaking MRI developments in the 1970s that revolutionised medical imaging, and Alec Jeffreys’ 1984 DNA profiling breakthrough that reshaped forensic science.

Today, the West Midlands is home to:

1,200+ MedTech companies

17,000+ life sciences employees

● The UK’s largest regional MedTech cluster

It’s also backed by world-class universities

University of Birmingham: £100M+ in annual health research funding; 75% of medical publications produced through international collaboration

University of Warwick: 700+ businesses supported through the Warwick Innovation District; over £100M raised since 2020

WHMTIA + Plug and Play

The West Midlands Health Tech Innovation Accelerator (WMHTIA), now in its third year, is a unique partnership of 21 delivery organisations from academia, NHS trusts, and industry.

In 2024, Plug and Play brought leaders from Roche, Bayer, and NHS England to deliver tailored startup support, pilot opportunities, and access to innovation grants.

Alongside the University of Birmingham, WMHTIA and Plug and Play have successfully achieved the following:

114 health tech enterprises provided with intensive bespoke development support

£2.48m awarded by the WMHTIA in secondary grant funding to support health tech development

269 health tech enterprises engaged in WMHTIA’s support network

Development of strategic partnerships between the region’s academic partners, University of Birmingham, NHS trusts, and private industry

What’s Next?

Applications for Batch 4 of the Plug and Play Health Platform are open. With the launch of the Precision Health Technologies Accelerator (PHTA) at the University of Birmingham and a new £4 million government funding package secured for WMHTIA, the region is poised for its next phase of growth. These developments are expected to create hundreds of high-value jobs and attract tens of millions in new investment over the next 12–18 months.

As health innovation moves beyond traditional geographies, the West Midlands is emerging as the UK’s most dynamic and collaborative region for health tech startups. Plug and Play’s work is helping to ensure that bold ideas can scale with the support of global networks, trusted partners, and access to real-world testing environments. Whether you’re a startup, corporate, or health system, now is the time to engage. Join us in shaping the future of healthcare, right here in the West Midlands.
