Life sciences are the areas of science that study living things. That sounds simple, but the field is enormous. It stretches from the cells inside the human body to plants, animals, bacteria and entire ecosystems.
It is also much closer to everyday life than many people realise. The medicine in your bathroom cabinet, a blood test used by your doctor, the technology inside a fitness tracker and crops developed to resist disease can all involve life sciences.
At its heart, life sciences is about understanding how life works and using that knowledge to solve real problems.
What do life sciences include?
“Life sciences” is an umbrella term rather than a single subject. Biology sits at its centre, but the wider field includes biochemistry, microbiology, genetics, genomics, neuroscience, biotechnology and environmental science.
Within industry, the phrase is often used for work connected with health and medicine. This includes pharmaceutical companies developing new treatments, biotechnology businesses working with cells or genes, and medical technology companies creating devices, diagnostic tests and digital health tools. The UK’s Office for Life Sciences describes the sector as covering areas including biopharmaceuticals, medical technology, genomics and digital health.
These areas constantly overlap. A new cancer treatment, for example, might begin with research into how cells behave. Scientists may then use genetic data to identify a possible target, biotechnology to produce the treatment and clinical trials to test whether it works safely.
That journey from an early idea to something that can help a patient is a major part of the life sciences industry.
Why are life sciences important?
Many of the biggest challenges facing society are biological.
How can diseases be detected earlier? What happens when bacteria become resistant to antibiotics? How can food be produced more sustainably? How can we help people live longer, healthier lives?
Life sciences research helps turn these questions into practical answers. It can lead to new medicines, quicker diagnostic tests, more effective medical devices and a better understanding of how diseases begin and develop.
The field is also important to the UK economy. The latest official figures show that the UK life sciences industry includes more than 6,000 businesses, employs around 360,000 people and generated approximately £147 billion in turnover during 2023/24.
It is not a small, isolated corner of science. It brings together universities, hospitals, start-ups, charities, investors and major international companies.
Examples of life sciences in everyday life
You do not need to enter a laboratory to see life sciences in action.
Consider someone with diabetes checking their glucose levels, a patient receiving treatment chosen using information about their genes, or a farmer planting crops that are better able to withstand disease. Each example draws on years of biological research and development.
Other familiar examples include vaccines, pregnancy tests, asthma inhalers, wearable health monitors and laboratory tests used to identify infections. Medical technology can include everything from diagnostic equipment and test kits to software and mobile health applications.
Even products that feel ordinary often have complicated science behind them.
This is one reason life sciences can be difficult to define neatly. It is not only about making discoveries under a microscope. It is also about turning those discoveries into treatments, products and services that people can actually use.
What careers are available in life sciences?
A common misconception is that a career in life sciences always means wearing a white coat and standing at a laboratory bench. That is one route, but it is far from the only one.
The sector needs biomedical scientists, microbiologists, pharmacologists, clinical researchers and laboratory technicians. It also needs engineers to design medical equipment, data specialists to analyse genetic information and regulatory professionals to make sure new treatments and technologies meet strict standards.
There are also opportunities in manufacturing, project management, communications, investment, policy, sales and business development.
One person might help run a clinical trial. Another could explain a scientific breakthrough to the public, secure funding for a biotechnology start-up or help bring a new medical device to market.
In other words, life sciences brings together science, healthcare, technology, engineering and business. That range is exactly what makes the sector so interesting.
