Widening Access means Widening Success: Redesigning Psychology Education with Healthcare Partners
This interactive seminar presents a pioneering curriculum approach from Birmingham City University’s Dept of Psychology and Counselling that brings real-life health and community challenges into undergraduate education through partnerships with NHS Trusts.
We demonstrate the reciprocal value for both students and healthcare partner bodies when authentic workplace challenges are introduced into the curriculum.
In addition to the practical learning benefits, there is strong evidence that students (particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds) through application of their psychology knowledge and skills in real-world environments, can build hitherto-unavailable professional networks, improve their employability and gain a firmer sense of personal credibility.
Attendees at this session will hear from academic, professional and student participants in the pilot scheme and discuss practical frameworks in which curriculum design, widening of participation, workforce development and health partnerships can be productively brought together.
